LE 1020 - Essentials of College Study

Course Description: 
An orientation course designed to assist you in becoming better prepared for the rigors of college study.  By completing the studies and practice of this course you will have greater knowledge and skills at your disposal to assist you in successfully reaching your academic objectives.  Topics in this course include the nature of the adult learner, making transitions, planning, memory, reading, notes, tests, thinking, communicating, diversity, technology, health, accessing college resources, and personal issues that face many college students.

Journal #1
Discovery Statement - Do you think this quiz (the Multiple Intelligence Inventory) is an accurate assessment of your strengths, or did you expect to test higher in one of the other intelligences?  Which one and why?  In which intelligence were you the highest?  What was your second highest intelligence?  Which was your lowest?  Why do you think you scored as you did in each of these areas?  Give an example of how your intelligence type is demonstrated in your school work.

Intention Statement - How will you use your knowledge of the different intelligences and of your strengths to do better in school?

Discovery Statement - Are you internally or externally focused?  Which of the learning styles did you score the highest in?  Why do you think you scored high in this area?  Were the results of both learning styles assessments the same?  If not, why do you think they were different? Think back on a successful learning experience you have had at school, on the job, or with a hobby or leisure activity.  What made the experience successful?  That is, do you like to watch before you try something, do you like to hear a lot of information before you act, do you like to learn by being hands-on, do you like to receive information in written language or in a design or picture format?

Discovery Statement:
What is a stereotype others might have of you (i.e. based on your age, gender, appearance, etc.)?  What would be your reaction to being viewed by those around you as this stereotype?  In what ways are you similar to the stereotype?  In what ways are you dissimilar?  What, specifically, might you do in order to have others see you more accurately or to see you more as you want to be seen?

Discovery Statement:
What insights did the Muscle Reading assignment give you about the way you read?  How could you adapt or modify Muscle Reading to make it more useful?  Describe any steps that you would add, subtract, or change. 

Intention Statement:
Do you plan on using Muscle Reading or some of the steps involved in this technique in your future reading assignments?  Why or why not?

Discovery Statement:
Find two areas in your life where the results of your behavior are not meeting your needs.  What beliefs are driving those behaviors and what needs are those behaviors trying to meet? 

Intention Statement:
How will you change the beliefs and the behaviors so that your needs can be better met?

What are 5 things that you will do that will help you to deal with or prevent excessive stress or burnout?


Journal #10
Discovery Statement
You have a friend who is suffering from one of the following:  depression, substance abuse, eating disorder, sleeping disorder, or suicidal behavior.  Choose one of these issues and write 3 things that you can or should do to help your friend in dealing with their problem.  Look up reputable sources to help you answer this question.

Discovery Statement
What is your overall opinion of this course? What are the three most important ideas and/or skills you learned in this course.  How have you incorporated them into your study habits and/or life?  What is the one thing you found least helpful about the course?  What specific suggestions can you make that would improve the course in the future.  Please be specific and be honest.  I value the thoughtful feedback that you can provide.
