Open House- On
Wednesday, November 2 Utah State University
will conduct an open house at the South
Towne Expo Center for students interested in
attending USU next year. Interested students

–Foundation for Individual Rights in
Education Scholarship -
Foundation for Individual Rights in
Education is offering their fourth annual
“Freedom in Academia” high school essay
contest. FIRE will award $12,500 in college
scholarships, including a $5,000 scholarship
to the student with the best essay. The
essay is to be about how American
universities betray the purpose of a
university and violate the constitutional
guarantees of free expression as depicted in
two documentaries found at
www.thefire.org/multimedia.
In addition to the $5,000 scholarship, the
first place winner’s essay will be featured
on FIRE’s website, and the winner will
receive an all-expense-paid invitation to
the 2012 Campus Freedom Network Conference
in Philadelphia. The essay must be 800-1,000

First
Freedom Student Competition - The
First Freedom Student Competition is a
first-semester national essay and video
contest. It offers high-school students an
opportunity to compete for $2,500 awards as
they examine the history and current-day
relevance of religious freedom, and then, by
written essay or video production, present

students in the United States and U.S.
territories, and to American schools and
American home-schooled students worldwide.

Komen for the Cure College Scholarship
- The Susan G. Komen for the Cure College
Scholarship Award Program offers college
scholarships of up to $10,000 a year over a
four-year period. Applicants must meet all
of the following criteria to be eligible for
this scholarship: Must have lost a
parent/guardian to breast cancer, OR must be
a breast cancer survivor diagnosed at 25
years or younger, must be a high school
senior, college freshman, sophomore or
junior, must plan to attend a
state-supported college or university in the
state where they permanently reside
(students in Washington DC can attend
state-supported schools in Maryland or
Virginia), must have a high school and/or
college GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale, must be
no older than 25 years old by May 2012, must
be a U.S. citizen, or documented permanent
resident of the U.S. (or US Territory), and
never at any time have been subject to any
disciplinary action by any institution or
entity, including, but not limited to, any
educational or law enforcement agency, and
must be a driven advocate for breast cancer
education and research who is able to
complete a minimum of 20 hours of community

NASSP/Herff Jones Principal's Leadership
Award (PLA)-scholarships ranging
from $1000-$12,000 will be awarded to 100
outstanding seniors from all 50 states, the
District of Colombia, the Virgin Islands,
and Puerto Rico. Students cannot apply for
this award; they must be nominated by their
high school. Itineris may nominate one
senior on the basis of leadership skills,
participation in service organizations and
clubs, achievements in the arts and
sciences, employment experience, and

Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship-
This program, funded through the Comcast
Foundation, recognizes high school seniors
from Comcast communities for their
commitment to community service, academics,
and demonstrated leadership. To acknowledge
these accomplishments, recipients of the
award will receive a one-time grant of
$1,000. Itineris may nominate one senior to
apply for this award. Eligibility
requirements include being enrolled as a
full time high school senior, GPA of 2.8 or
higher, demonstrate leadership abilities in
school activities or work experiences,
strong commitment to and involvement in
community service, and plan to attend an
accredited, nonprofit college, university,
or vocational/technical school in the U.S.

Annual Science Day at the U- On
Saturday, November 12, 2011, High school
students (grades 10-12) from around the
intermountain west are invited to attend a
day of science-related workshops. These
interactive workshops give high school
students a great look at laboratory research
and career opportunities in science, math
and engineering. The event is free to
students, parents and educators but requires
pre-registration. Lunch is provided! During
the closing activities six $500 scholarship
prizes will be awarded! To be considered for
this special prize you must: 1) attend
Science Day at the U; 2) complete the
drawing form provided in your packet of
materials; 3) attend the closing ceremony.

Daniels
Scholarship - The 2011-2012 Daniels
Scholarship- Daniels Scholars are selected
based on their strength of character,
leadership potential and emotional maturity,
potential to contribute to one’s community,
well-rounded personality, and academic
performance or promise. Daniels Scholarships
may be used at any two-or four-year
not-for-profit accredited college or
university in the U.S.; students must intend
to complete a bachelor’s degree. This is not
a full-ride scholarship; it is designed to
cover the unmet needs of the student.
Scholarship amount is determined after all
other financial aid sources and expected
family contribution has been applied.
Daniels Scholarships are annually renewable
up to 8 semesters if terms and conditions of
scholarship are met. Daniels Scholars are
required to have a job during the school
year. The minimum work requirement is 125
hours during the first year, and 250 hours
during all other years. Eligibility Criteria
(students must meet all of the following
requirements) Be nominated by a designated
Referral Agency (see Matt Ekker) High school
student that will graduate during the
2011-2012 school year (from a Utah,
Colorado, New Mexico, or Wyoming school) Be
a current resident of Utah (or Colorado, New
Mexico, or Wyoming) Be a U.S. citizen, a
permanent resident of the U.S., or have
refugee or asylum status in the U.S.
Demonstrate financial need Take the ACT by
October 22, 2011 and achieve a composite
score of 17 or higher OR take the SAT by
October 1, 2011 and achieve a combined math
and critical reading score of 830 or higher.
Timeline: September-November: Referral
Agencies nominate students. Nominees apply
online (applications include essay
questions, and recommendations so apply
early). January: semifinalists are chosen
March-April: regional semifinalists are
interviewed by local community volunteers
