November Scholarships

The 2011-2012 United States Senate Youth Program- this opportunity is for high school juniors and seniors that are interested in and knowledgeable about government and politics. Itineris may send two students to the Senate Youth competition in Salt Lake City on Friday, November 18. Two students will be selected at the state competition for a $5000 scholarship and a week-long trip to Washington D.C. Eligibility: Resident of Utah High school junior or senior Elected student government officer or Elected or selected (by panel, commission, or board) student representative to district, regional, or state-level civic or education organization May not have previously been a delegate to the program Must be able to attend the 50th Annual U.S. Senate Youth Program in Washington D.C. Application consists of a 20-page portfolio that must be mailed or delivered to the Granite School District building. Deadline: Tuesday, November 1 at 5:00pm.

The Eugene McDermott Scholars Program (The University of Texas at Dallas) -  Priority Deadline: November 1, 2011: Priority Deadline for student application and counselor recommendation—ensures notification concerning semifinalist status by November 15. December 5, 2011: Semifinalist Deadline for invited students to submit three additional recommendations-ensures notification concerning finalist status by January 25. Regular Deadline: January 6, 2012: Regular Deadline for student application with four recommendations—ensures notification concerning finalist status by January 25. The American Harlequin Dance Scholarship - This scholarship is open to students enrolled in a public or private dance school program. Applicants must be a U.S. or Canadian citizen between the ages of 15 and 21 to be eligible for this award. One (1) $5,000.00 scholarship, one (1) $4,000.00 scholarship, two (2) $3,000.00 scholarships, four (4) $2,000.00 scholarships, and two (2) $1,000.00 scholarships will be awarded. Ron Brown Scholars Program - The Ron Brown Scholar Program seeks to identify African-American high school seniors who will make significant contributions to society. Applicants must excel academically, exhibit exceptional leadership potential, participate in community service activities and demonstrate financial need. The applicant must be a US citizen or hold a permanent resident visa card. Scholarship winners will receive $10,000 annually for 4 years. The 2012 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards- If you’ve made a difference through volunteering over the past year, you could win $1000 and a fabulous trip to Washington, D.C. next May. Even more importantly, you could win recognition that might inspire other young people to follow your example. These prestigious awards, sponsored by Prudential Financial and the National Association of Secondary School Principals, have honored nearly 100,000 middle and high school students at the local, state, and national level over the past 16 years solely for their volunteer work. USU Open House- On Wednesday, November 2 Utah State University will conduct an open house at the South Towne Expo Center for students interested in attending USU next year. Interested students should apply for admission online before attending this event. They should also bring their transcript and ACT or SAT scores to the Open House. If you qualify, you will be awarded an academic scholarship on the spot. USU Admissions staff and representatives from other offices across campus will be ready to answer all your Utah State questions. Come to learn about majors in all eight colleges, talk with experts on housing, financial aid, honors, and student life, receive an academic scholarship, and enjoy Aggie ice cream. FIRE –Foundation for Individual Rights in Education Scholarship  - Foundation for Individual Rights in Education is offering their fourth annual “Freedom in Academia” high school essay contest. FIRE will award $12,500 in college scholarships, including a $5,000 scholarship to the student with the best essay. The essay is to be about how American universities betray the purpose of a university and violate the constitutional guarantees of free expression as depicted in two documentaries found at www.thefire.org/multimedia.  In addition to the $5,000 scholarship, the first place winner’s essay will be featured on FIRE’s website, and the winner will receive an all-expense-paid invitation to the 2012 Campus Freedom Network Conference in Philadelphia. The essay must be 800-1,000 words. Students may enter online at www.thefire.org/contests  or through the mail. The deadline is November 5, 2011; the winners will announced by December 16, 2011. First Freedom Student Competition - The First Freedom Student Competition is a first-semester national essay and video contest. It offers high-school students an opportunity to compete for $2,500 awards as they examine the history and current-day relevance of religious freedom, and then, by written essay or video production, present their evaluation. The competition is open to students in the United States and U.S. territories, and to American schools and American home-schooled students worldwide. We invite 9th - 12th grade students at all levels of academic placement to participate. 28th Annual USOE Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Contest- 7th to 12th grade Utah students are eligible to participate in this contest by submitting an essay of 500 words or less OR by submitting a video of 3 minutes or less related to the 2012 contest theme "How are you demonstrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision of unity in your life?" Grand Prize Winners: Essay Category- $100 Video Category- $100 Grade Level Winners: Essay Category- $50 (5 winners) Video Category- $50 (5 winners) Winners will also be invited to a luncheon in Salt Lake City on January 12, 2012 from 12-2pm. Emory University Scholarship - Emory Scholars and Goizueta Scholars represent an impressive array of academic, cultural, and extracurricular interest and achievements. Almost all recipients have won distinction beyond the classroom, including national awards in music, languages, science, mathematics, or other fields. Scholarship selection is based entirely upon a student’s merit: financial need is not considered. Susan G. Komen for the Cure College Scholarship - The Susan G. Komen for the Cure College Scholarship Award Program offers college scholarships of up to $10,000 a year over a four-year period. Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to be eligible for this scholarship: Must have lost a parent/guardian to breast cancer, OR must be a breast cancer survivor diagnosed at 25 years or younger, must be a high school senior, college freshman, sophomore or junior, must plan to attend a state-supported college or university in the state where they permanently reside (students in Washington DC can attend state-supported schools in Maryland or Virginia), must have a high school and/or college GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale, must be no older than 25 years old by May 2012, must be a U.S. citizen, or documented permanent resident of the U.S. (or US Territory), and never at any time have been subject to any disciplinary action by any institution or entity, including, but not limited to, any educational or law enforcement agency, and must be a driven advocate for breast cancer education and research who is able to complete a minimum of 20 hours of community service per semester. 2011-2012 NASSP/Herff Jones Principal's Leadership Award (PLA)-scholarships ranging from $1000-$12,000 will be awarded to 100 outstanding seniors from all 50 states, the District of Colombia, the Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico. Students cannot apply for this award; they must be nominated by their high school. Itineris may nominate one senior on the basis of leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience, and academic record. To be considered for the nomination, students must submit an essay explaining how they qualify for this award--see Matt Ekker for more details. Deadline: November 11, 2011.

Comcast Leaders and Achievers® Scholarship- This program, funded through the Comcast Foundation, recognizes high school seniors from Comcast communities for their commitment to community service, academics, and demonstrated leadership. To acknowledge these accomplishments, recipients of the award will receive a one-time grant of $1,000. Itineris may nominate one senior to apply for this award. Eligibility requirements include being enrolled as a full time high school senior, GPA of 2.8 or higher, demonstrate leadership abilities in school activities or work experiences, strong commitment to and involvement in community service, and plan to attend an accredited, nonprofit college, university, or vocational/technical school in the U.S. **Employees of Comcast, its subsidiaries and affiliates, and the children and other family members of Comcast employees and employees of Comcast’s subsidiaries and affiliates are not eligible. To be considered for the nomination, students must submit an essay explaining how they qualify for this scholarship--see Matt Ekker for more details. Deadline: November 18, 2011.

23rd Annual Science Day at the U- On Saturday, November 12, 2011, High school students (grades 10-12) from around the intermountain west are invited to attend a day of science-related workshops. These interactive workshops give high school students a great look at laboratory research and career opportunities in science, math and engineering. The event is free to students, parents and educators but requires pre-registration. Lunch is provided! During the closing activities six $500 scholarship prizes will be awarded! To be considered for this special prize you must: 1) attend Science Day at the U; 2) complete the drawing form provided in your packet of materials; 3) attend the closing ceremony. The scholarship is for study at the University of Utah. Daniels Scholarship - The 2011-2012 Daniels Scholarship- Daniels Scholars are selected based on their strength of character, leadership potential and emotional maturity, potential to contribute to one’s community, well-rounded personality, and academic performance or promise. Daniels Scholarships may be used at any two-or four-year not-for-profit accredited college or university in the U.S.; students must intend to complete a bachelor’s degree. This is not a full-ride scholarship; it is designed to cover the unmet needs of the student. Scholarship amount is determined after all other financial aid sources and expected family contribution has been applied. Daniels Scholarships are annually renewable up to 8 semesters if terms and conditions of scholarship are met. Daniels Scholars are required to have a job during the school year. The minimum work requirement is 125 hours during the first year, and 250 hours during all other years. Eligibility Criteria (students must meet all of the following requirements) Be nominated by a designated Referral Agency (see Matt Ekker) High school student that will graduate during the 2011-2012 school year (from a Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, or Wyoming school) Be a current resident of Utah (or Colorado, New Mexico, or Wyoming) Be a U.S. citizen, a permanent resident of the U.S., or have refugee or asylum status in the U.S. Demonstrate financial need Take the ACT by October 22, 2011 and achieve a composite score of 17 or higher OR take the SAT by October 1, 2011 and achieve a combined math and critical reading score of 830 or higher. Timeline: September-November: Referral Agencies nominate students. Nominees apply online (applications include essay questions, and recommendations so apply early).
